Nanded is the home turf of Congress leader and former Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan, who is an MP from the constituency.

The Congress has also built strong leads in 33 seats in the NWCMC, which is now one of the last surviving bastions of the party in the state.

The counting of votes is underway for the Nanded Municipal Corporation polls which was held on Wednesday. Although a Congress stronghold for the last 15 years, this time Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis addressed a high-pitched rally in Nanded days before the polling and targeted the Congress and the Shiv Sena. In the recent elections to the 16 municipal corporations, the BJP came to power in 13.

No party, including the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), which tried hard to dislodge the Congress from Nanded seems to be in race.

The voting, which took place on Wednesday, saw a 60 per cent turnout.

The Nanded Municipal Corporation has 3.96 lakh registered voters.

Before the High Court, Dr Aukot will be seeking an interpretation of the meaning "fresh elections" as ordered by the court under article 140 (3).

The Congress, which now hold the Nanded-Waghala Municipal Corporation (NWMC), seeks to retain the civic body while the BJP has gone all out to wrest control.

Counting of votes in this ward will be done twice - through EVMs as well as VVPAT machines, the election commission officials said.

The Shiv Sena was leading in two and the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) was ahead in one seat. The party may lose all 11 seats it had won in 2012.

There are 81 seats across 20 civic wards of the NWMC.

This time, 578 candidates are contesting the election to Nanded Municipal Corporation.

Congress that is now ruling the civic body is seeking to retain it while the BJP, that has been thumping all other parties in most local body polls is seeking to seize power in Nanded.
