Anupam Kher appointed as the new FTII chairman after Gajendra Chauhan


He has replaced former television actor Gajendra Chauhan.

Kher, who has appeared in over 500 films, is a recipient of the Padma Shri in 2004 and the Padma Bhushan in 2016 for his contribution in the field of cinema and arts.

Kher has acted in both Bollywood, Hollywood and theatre.

He has also headed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and the National School of Drama in the past.

However, Chauhan regrets that he got very less time to work at FTII. The students, later, called off the strike as it affected their academics, but the President of the FTII student association had earlier told mid-day, "We have been struggling with this issue for nearly five months". Since its inception in 1960, FTII has become India's premier film and television institute, with its alumni becoming technicians, actors and directors in the film and television industry. Also, we don't see this appointment any different than that of Gajendra Chauhan. "Other things don't matter for the government", Kumar told The Indian Express.

The appointment of Chauhan had created outrage at the campus, which is located in Pune, and his tenure ended with a massive 139 days of protest by the students.

The TV actor and BJP member was named for the post of Chairman in June 2015. Also, despite several unpopular decisions being taken by the administration in last two years, students have not come out with any strong response.
