Jose Mourinho: 'Finances key in Romelu Lukaku deal'

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has claimed that his club's spending power saw them win the race for Everton forward Romelu Lukaku during the summer transfer window.

Rooney made an impressive start to his second spell at Goodison Park after the proven striker scored against Manchester City and Stoke City.

United have started in fantastic form in Mourinho's second season, now topping both the Premier League and UEFA Champions League Group A. The Reds have scored at least two goals in every game since the start of the league campaign.

For most of the summer, it did look like the 24-year-old would be heading back to his first English club, Chelsea, while United's interest was seemingly in Alvaro Morata.

Jose Mourinho believes Wayne Rooney should be recieved with respect when he returns to face Manchester United with Everton on Sunday.

"I don't think it was my influence, no", he said, per Sky Sports.

"It will be interesting to see how United handle the pressure of not having as much possession and also having more pressure placed on their defence as they haven't been challenged yet".

Manchester United warmed up for the visit of Everton with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Swiss outfit Basel in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Speaking to the media, Mourinho spoke about the difficulty of the Premier League this season.

"I just think that the second season is a good season for evolution in relation to the first season because in the first season you arrive and sometimes, like in my case, I was not even able to organise a pre-season because it had already been organised".

"At the team level, I am happy", he said. When players are similar, you can compare.
