Gareth Barry "very proud" to equal Ryan Giggs's Premier League record

"The idea of becoming the first player to start 600 Premier League games and to equal Ryan Giggs's appearance record is hard to take in", he said in Albion's matchday programme. He will probably break Giggs' record next Monday away to Arsenal. Barry has also been capped 53 times for England and admitted he has given no thoughts to stopping yet.

Barry is set to equal Giggs's record of 632 games when West Brom host West Ham on Saturday. I've spoken to a lot of my old friends who have retired and no-one has said: 'What are you doing still playing?' Everyone said: 'Play as long as possible.' You stop when you stop enjoying it and I'll know when I've had enough and can't keep up with the boys. Looking at the stats, to have started 599 out of 631 so far, that is a bit surprising because that's a pretty good percentage.

Instead, Barry landed a move to the Hawthorns and is still playing a key role for the Baggies, who sit comfortably in mid-table after an encouraging start to the season.

"Him coming into the football club, you just recognise and realise the dedication and his application towards his profession is just absolutely fantastic. I feel good, I'm told all my stats are up there with those of the younger players so that's all promising". He is a great lad off the pitch, he has mixed in really well with the rest of the lads and has been our best player in almost all the games we have played so far.
