Todd Bowles: Christian Hackenberg over Bryce Petty 'a coaching decision'

A clause in quarterback Josh McCown's one-year contract with the Jets will trigger a $125,000 bonus every time he starts for the team this season, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.

Bowles calling it a coaching decision indicates that Petty was healthy and ready to go, yet chose to go with Hackenberg anyway. But he made it sound as if the arrangement won't be permanent.

"It could change", he said. "It will probably change all the time". Petty was listed ahead of Hackenberg on the depth chart.

Bowles was vague when asked how he'd handle it in the coming weeks.

"Bryce had a full week of practice", he said.

Bowles could be playing word games.

Hurricane Irma: Here's the latest storm path outlook with Meteorologist Steve Pfaff
"Some people may want to be out of the storm threat altoghter, which means they would go north to Augusta, or Columbia and SC ". Hurricane Irma is expected to track towards southern Florida over the weekend, then along the East Coast of Florida into Monday.

"That was a coach's decision", coach Todd Bowles said. Instead, they should seriously consider putting their second-round draft pick Christian Hackenberg under center to see what he can do. It is time for the Jets to stick to a plan, and that plan should be trying to develop their young quarterback.

Kony Ealy may not have been a good fit for the Patriots. But ultimately, the Jets decided to make him inactive Sunday.

Two newcomers were bright spots for the Jets. Ealy had four tackles, a tackle for loss, a quarterback hit and a pass defensed.

The Patriots cut Ealy after the third preseason game and the Jets claimed him off waivers.

The other inactive Jets for Week 1 are WR Jeremy Kerley, CB Derrick Jones, S Rontez Miles, TE Jordan Leggett, G Dakota Dozier and TE Neal Sterling. He made both of his field goal attempts - from 52 and 48 yards - in the second quarter and an extra point.

Tight end Eric Tomlinson suffered an elbow injury in the first half and did not return. Bowles said that Carter is also scheduled to undergo tests.
