Gauri Lankesh remembered as a gutsy journalist

Lankesh was Editor of the weekly Kannada tabloid Lankesh Patrika.

It is been reported that the miscreants have fired three shots at Gowri, when she was standing outside her residence.

Gauri Lankesh, a senior journalist, has been shot dead here at her residence in Rajarajeshwari Nagar.

Gauri Lankesh was entering her house after parking her auto.

This incident took place around 8:30 PM today on 5th September. She collapsed on the spot and succumbed to the injuries. It is alleged that the shooters were waiting for her outside her in Rajajeswari Nagar. In her work, she frequently criticised communal violence.

In November, Lankesh was convicted by a court of defaming two BJP leaders for articles published in her periodical in 2008.

Lankesh, 55, was the daughter of famous poet-turned-journalist P Lankesh, who began Lankesh Patrike.

However, further details on her murder are still awaited.

In 2015, an Indian scholar, Malleshappa M. Kalburgi, was killed in a similar way, also in Bangalore.

During the same time she had told The Wire that she was concerned about the state of freedom of expression in India and that she felt that people who questioned the ruling ideology were targeted.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday condemned the death of Senior journalist and activist Gauri Lankesh and said it "is an assassination on democracy".

Lankesh's body was found on the verandah of her house, the official said.
