Taysom Hill, Jordan Tripp among suprise cuts as Packers finalize roster

The Packers may now have to give Joe Callahan an opportunity to stay in Green Bay on the practice squad.

Hill flashed real potential in the preseason and the Packers certainly wanted to keep him around on the practice squad, but no dice. He lost the third quarterback job to Hill late in the preseason.

Hill, a rookie, signed with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent but was waived by the team Saturday as National Football League teams were forced to cut their opening-day rosters to 53 active players, resulting in more than 1,100 players being cut this past week, most on Friday and Saturday. Trevone Boykin threw for 166 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions on 13 of 21 passing. On Sunday, teams will be able to add up to 10 players to their practice roster and Gray is considered a good bet for that role with the Packers.

The 23-year-old Winnipegger was a priority free agent signing by the Packers in spring after a four-year career at the University of Manitoba.

Teams have until Saturday afternoon to cut their rosters down to 53 players.

Dallas Cowboys claim former Packers DT Brian Price off waivers
In 11 games last season, he led the Packers with 13 special teams tackles and was credited with 19 on defense with one sack. The Cowboys acquired linebacker Jayrone Elliott from the Packers on Sunday for a late-round pick in the 2018 draft.

Hill was impressive the entire preseason. Plus, all three rookie running backs, Jamaal Williams, Devante Mays and Aaron Jones played well and deserved to make team. "Everyone got better. There was a couple hiccups, but I thought they progressed". "I worked hard to learn the offense so I had an opportunity to play and make sure that I knew what was going on".

Hill finished the Rams game going 4-for-4 for 31 yards and a touchdown.

The decision to move on from Jordan Tripp, who had been a core special teams player also seemed unusual, as did the cutting of Reggie Gilbert, who posted two sacks and a number of pressures in the preseason. The rookie also had 10 carries for 71 yards and a score.

A year ago, Green Bay kept just two running backs on its active roster. So even though the Packers 53-man roster looks a certain way, by tomorrow or mid-week, it could have a couple new faces, especially on the offensive line. "I think for the most part I did that".
