Miami Mayor: We Never Considered Ourselves a Sanctuary City

Shortly after the administration of President Donald Trump announced they would cut funding for what were labeled "sanctuary cities", Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez announced they would comply with government requirements when it came to reporting undocumented immigrants in their custody who were arrested for other charges.

There isn't a firm legal definition for sanctuary cities, and different cities may have dissimilar rules for how much they comply with federal immigration authorities.

He also disputed Miami is a "sanctuary city" but said it had not been honoring a 48-hour detention requests.

He later went on, "we can not continue to give tax money to cities that undermine active law enforcement", in reference to the federal government saying they will withhold federal grants for "sanctuary cities" if they do not comply with their immigration policies. Protesters were set to gather at the Torch of Friendship and then march en masse to PortMiami.

"I know that Miami-Dade will be an example of the good that comes from following the law", Mr. Sessions said in a statement released ahead of the event.

Hands-free calling is now rolling out to Google Home
For example, you telling Google Home to call your Dad would have a different result than your spouse using the same command. Say something like, "OK Google, call the nearest sandwich shop", and it'll connect the dots and help you get your grub.

It's hard to nail down a concrete number of just how many cities are considered to be a sanctuary for immigrants - some cities have an ordinance or policy in place; others do not.

Miami has never been officially declared a sanctuary city, but President Obama's administration is said to have put the county on notice of a change to a sanctuary city.

Anyone concerned about the possible loss of federal funds in "sanctuary" cities should contact their city councils and local mayors, he said.

ILRC argues that local law enforcement jurisdictions do not have a "legal obligation to assist with civil immigration enforcement, which is the responsibility of the federal government". "We have already seen that: the same Independence Day weekend when Chicago suffered more than 100 shootings and 15 homicides, Miami-Dade also had a historic number of shooting deaths - zero". Cities say such immigrant-friendly policies actually enhance public safety. "We think there's about 150,000 undocumented immigrants here in Miami-Dade County".

"It's my job as a mayor to protect the citizens, all the citizens of Miami-Dade County, said Gimenez".
