Yankees place Masahiro Tanaka on DL with shoulder inflammation

Today it looks like they might not have enough.

A day after CC Sabathia was placed on the 10-day disabled list with discomfort in the right knee, Masahiro Tanaka is joining him with right shoulder inflammation, the Yankees announced early Saturday afternoon.

"From a structural standpoint he comes out fine".

Tanaka said Saturday his shoulder felt sore and exhausted toward the end of the Blue Jays game.

"We decided he needs a break", Girardi said.

His skillset also meshed well with that of Tyrod Taylor , a player who, this summer, nearly became an ex-Bill himself. Watkins' future in Buffalo was already in question after the Bills in May declined to pick up his fifth-year option.

Tanaka last pitched on Wednesday in a poor outing against the Blue Jays, walking a career-high five batters and allowing three runs - two earned - and two hits in four-plus innings in the Yankees' 11-5 win in Toronto. Jordan Montgomery was recalled Friday to take Sabathia's turn in the rotation Sunday. The 28-year-old was scheduled to start Monday night when the New York Mets play at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees made the move Saturday before hosting the AL East-leading Boston Red Sox.

Girardi said there is nothing structurally wrong with Tanaka.

Tanaka is in the fourth year of a seven-year $155 million contract that permits him to "opt-out" after this season.

Tanaka is 8-10 with a career-worst 4.92 ERA in 23 starts this season. He has eight starts where he allowed one run or less and seven where he allowed five or more. That does not count the final two weeks of last season when he was shut down because of a strained right forearm. He added that he's frustrated to miss time but doesn't expect to be out long. "I know this is going to be a relatively short time off and I believe this time off will get me back stronger and back on track".
