Redskins linebacker Trent Murphy to miss season with knee injury

Murphy will miss the 2017 season and deprive the Redskins of a key pass rusher.

An MRI exam Friday revealed the injury, which occurred during Washington's third defensive series against the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium. Coaches have been pleased with how he's performed in practice. "He was really having a great offseason, then he followed it up with a really good training camp so far".

Murphy, a free agent after the season, was coming off a career-best nine sacks and was playing well in the preseason opener before the injury. The grim diagnosis wipes out a 2017 campaign that was already going to be capped at 12 regular-season games.

Already popped with a four-game ban for the use of performance-enhancing substances, Murphy tore his an ACL during Washington's first preseason game on Thursday, Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo of NFL.com report.
