The Team Penske ace, who is now sixth in Cup standings, has come tantalizingly close to winning a Cup race at MIS, finishing second in the 2012 August event and placing third three times (2011, 2014, and 2016). Michgian's wide track fits Kyle Larson's style perfectly as he is known to use every inch of a racetrack in search of the fastest groove. "I think Indy we were pretty good at, probably fourth- or fifth-best auto, and then same at Pocono, but we broke a driveshaft at Pocono and got in a wreck at Indy". After qualifying 13th on Friday, crew chief Cole Pearn continually made the #78 auto better posting the 10th and 2nd fastest speeds in the final two practices on Saturday.
The Pure Michigan 400 is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. on NBC Sports.
Larson said Ganassi is making an exception for Saturday night.
Martin Truex Jr. is on cloud nine right now. He also won his first stage of the season at the Glen, but still is looking for his first Cup series win of his career. The rest of the top 10 were Kyle Busch, Jamie McMurray, Erik Jones, Kyle Larson and Denny Hamlin. Once again, just like everywhere this season, Truex will be a threat to win and a threat to take home all the playoff points and not share with anyone else. Not only did the #13 team improve the auto through the final two practices (28th & 24th) but Ty has finished 24th or better in all three of his previous MI races in the Cup series. There's a lot of opportunity that arises in those moments.
1 killed, driver arrested in Charlottesville
Demonstrators are still staging rallies around the city, and reports say a vehicle crashed into a group of protesters. The Associated Press confirmed that the driver has been arrested.
Elsewhere on Sunday, Dale Earnhardt Jr.is still searching for his first win in the 2017 NASCAR season, and Kasey Kahne would probably love to add at least one more to his resume before he exits Hendrick Motorsports at the end of the year. His average finish of 13th is seventh best amongst the current drivers. This isn't the end of the line if Junior doesn't win, there are three more races after MI and Dale has won at two of those Bristol and Richmond. Three of the last six races have seen one driver (Larson, Logano, Kenseth) lead 90 or more laps with the other three races having two or three drivers share the laps led. Joey Logano is a close second and hasn't finished outside the Top 10 at either track since 2012 (10 races).
(24) Chase Elliott, Chevrolet, 202.429 miles per hour. They will be starting 12th but continually got better through the weekend and posted the third fastest speed in final practice.
"Dad drove to the bottom so I just went around a little bit higher and it stuck, and I got along his outside", the younger Earnhardt recalled.
"And like I said in the past, when you run in the top five consistently, you can win any time". MI is extra special to Keselowski and he has had five top five finishes and eight top tens here despite not having a victory.
Keselowski is locked into the playoffs, but Logano isn't.
