Guardiola defends Manchester City's big spending

Following his arrival at the Etihad a year ago, the Spaniard spent £171.5m on new players but could only guide the club to third in the Premier League, 15 points behind champions Chelsea.

To remedy that, the Catalan has overseen a £200million turnaround of City's squad, with Ederson, Kyle Walker, Danilo and Benjamin Mendy revolutionising City's ageing back line. "Hopefully next season I will be here and we are not going to spend how we spent this season", Guardiola said yesterday on the eve of his side's opening game of the new Premier League season at promoted Brighton and Hove Albion.

"We were favourites last season and missed out by 15 points so being favourites this season means nothing".

He added: "But we prefer to be aggressive without the ball, it's the same as last season".

"They were very good offensively last season and everybody could see defensively that's where the problem was".

The trip to the coast will be start to what is expected to be a season of pressure for Manchester City, as they head to the AMEX Stadium with many of people expecting the Citizens to begin their title charge tonight. It's completely the same, because it's the same manager.

The star studded gala event was also attended by Malaika Arora, Tannishtha Chatterjee and Shoojit Sircar. Adoring crowds waved out to her as daughter Aaradhya saw it all with a beaming smile.

Guardiola struck a satisfied tone when discussing his raft of fresh full-backs and their ability to have a transformative effect on City's play this season. But I think it is unsustainable.

"Of course now the full-backs are younger, they have energy in their legs and we are going to use them".

Having favoured a 3-4-3 system for much of pre-season, Guardiola confirmed he will alternate between three-man and four-man defences.

"In the next few years City will buy one, two, maybe three players". We were not able with those players to find a solution.

Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea have all been linked with the Spanish worldwide in the Spanish press in recent weeks.

With so many players that can go forward, City need someone who can do the dirty work while the magicians perform their tricks; who better than Sergio Busquets?
