While accepting his award for the NBA's Most Valuable Player, Oklahoma City Thunder star Russell Westbrook teared up when he thanked his family for their love and support.

Westbrook took the honor at the NBA Awards show Monday in NY, defeating fellow finalists Kawhi Leonard of San Antonio and James Harden of Houston in the voting.

Durant wrote that he'd predicted "years ago" that Westbrook would one day win the award, adding that Westbrook "balled out" this season and that you "gotta respect it". The most interesting part was, obviously, to see who wins the MVP award.

Russell Westbrook got the recognition he deserves on Monday, by being named the 2016-17 NBA MVP after an historic season where he broke Oscar Robertson's triple-double record.

"Remember, I was the one who taught you to play basketball", she began.

Mostly sunny, chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms — TODAY'S FORECAST
THROUGH INDEPENDENCE DAY: Routine summer weather is expected to continue this weekend and through the Independence Day holiday. The extended forecast for Tuesday and Tuesday night is for cloudy skies with a few showers and isolated thunderstorms.

Obviously, Durant and Westbrook were teammates for many years in Oklahoma City Thunder, before Durant chose to leave Oklahoma last summer and join the Warriors.

Durant is taking the high road in his praise of Westbrook, which is easy to do after winning his first NBA championship and NBA Finals MVP award. Williams was given a blazer with the colorful patterns Sager used to wear on the sidelines. You're the MVP. I'm so happy for you.

After Westbrook was presented with the Maurice Podoloff Trophy by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, he promptly called his team mates to the stage. You hold me down. "You guys are my brothers for life". I'm so thankful for all of the support.

In an emotional speech, Westbrook thanked the "man above" and the organization and coaching staff for taking a chance on him back in 2008 with the fourth pick in the National Basketball Association draft, when many analysts believed that he was a reach for the organization when it was still in Seattle.
