NY governor Cuomo to give extra $1 billion to transit improvements

"It is my expectation that with new leadership brought by Joe Lhota, the MTA will address the fundamental issues plaguing the transit system and overhaul the organizational structure of the MTA", the Democratic governor said.

"We know the system is decaying, and we know the system is decaying rapidly", Cuomo said at a press conference Thursday morning at Hammerstein Ballroom on West 34th Street, adding that he will sign an executive order declaring the state of emergency to allow his office to "expedite numerous normal government processes".

Cuomo's been busy mending his ego after reading "nasty" tweets about him from subway riders, which he called a "lack of communication".

Cuomo made the announcement in Midtown, Manhattan, at the "MTA Genius Transit Challenge", which solicited ideas from transit experts around the world to improve the city's rail service. "People were falling", said passenger Susan Pak, of Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. Problems with the subway system are hardly new, but the "current state of decline is wholly unacceptable", Cuomo said.

The $1 billion comes in addition to $8.3 billion in state funding to the MTA's 2015-2019 capital program that Cuomo announced a year ago.

Factors Impacting Oil As Price Marks 7-Month Low
US oil production increased to the highest since August 2015, according to a report from the Energy Information Administration. The American Petroleum Institute said on Tuesday that USA crude stockpiles had dropped more than forecast.

A preliminary investigation indicates the derailment just before 10 a.m. Tuesday in Harlem was caused by "an improperly secured piece of replacement rail that was stored on the tracks", Metropolitan Transportation Authority Chairman Joe Lhota and Interim Executive Director Ronnie Hakim said in a joint statement late Tuesday night. Earlier this month, riders were left sweltering underground in a stuck F train.

"If you do not fix the subway, next year's election will be a referendum on your governorship", said subway rider Michael Sciaraffo.

Lhota has 30 days to come up with a reorganization program. "What's going to happen?' Then it stopped", he said.

"They are why the MTA exists every day", Lhota said.
