White House says Trump tweet meets Comey tapes records request

Comey, of course, testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee in a highly viewed hearing on June 8, addressing - among other things - Trump's May tweet about the alleged recordings.

On Tuesday, Mueller met with the leaders of the House Intelligence Committee who are also conducting an investigation along with the Senate on the possible collusion of Trump campaign aides with Russian officials, separate from the FBI.

"And by talking about something like tapes, it made people and it made Comey, in particular, think to himself that I better be honest, I better tell the truth about circumstances regarding the situation".

As of two weeks ago, the president's argument was that Comey lied under oath, effectively committing perjury by repeating falsehoods about the scandal.

Trump concluded by maintaining that he had never changed his story, and that his "story was always the truth".

"My story didn't change". But his arrogant and reckless firing of Comey, along with his attempts to control the investigation by former FBI Director Robert Mueller, could ultimately prove to be Trump's downfall.

"It wasn't very stupid, I can tell you that", Trump said.

Mr Trump said Mr Mueller's friendship with James Comey, who had been heading the inquiry until sacked from his role as Federal Bureau of Investigation chief, was "bothersome".

Yesterday, for example, Trump lied about former DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson's congressional testimony from the day before.

Robenalt also drew parallels between Trump and former President Richard Nixon, who resigned in the wake of the Watergate scandal after recordings emerged of his conversations from inside the White House.

In Friday's Fox News interview, Trump also suggested - in confusing language - that a third party, possibly another arm of the government, could have recorded the conversations without his or Comey's knowledge.

"He's very, very good friends with Comey, which is bothersome", Mr Trump told Fox News.

"I mean, you'll have to take a look at that, because then he has to tell what actually took place at the events". "But I did not tape".

U.S. news reports say some of these staffers have made campaign contributions to Democratic candidates. According to The New York Times, the wording of the tweet was reviewed and approved by both White House Counsel and Trump's outside legal counsel. "Right, David? It better be, David", he said to applause.

Trump advocate Newt Gingrich urged the president to "rethink" Mr Mueller's position, saying: "Republicans are delusional if they think the special counsel is going to be fair".
