US lawmaker Scalise improving after baseball field shooting

Pushing that message of unity were the House leaders Speaker Paul Ryan and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who told CNN's Jake Tapper on CNN's "Erin Burnett OutFront" that despite party affiliation they were both on "Team Scalise".

Hodgkinson's apparent Facebook page included strong criticism of Republicans and the Trump administration.

Scalise was fielding balls at second base during the practice Wednesday when he was shot in the hip, and sustained serious injuries as the bullet traveled through his pelvis and injured internal organs.

But it's safe to say that no game has been as symbolically important as the one on Thursday night, which took place as one of the four shooting victims, House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA), lay in critical condition at the hospital following three surgeries.

Shooter James Hodgkinson of Belleville, Ill., was shot and died later Wednesday of his wounds in the hospital.

In a current climate where we are seemingly bombarded with police work that makes us question protocol and public safety, these two are obviously at the top of their game.

The FBI recovered a cellphone, computer, and camera from Hodgkinson's van and was examining them for evidence, the statement said.

The doctor predicted that Scalise, who has "hundreds" of bullet fragments in his body, will have to remain in the hospital for "weeks" but will eventually be able to walk and "hopefully run".

Scalise had been at "imminent risk of death" when he was first brought into the hospital on Wednesday, and he received many units of transfused blood, Sava said.

Politico reported Thursday that a lobbyist for Tyson Foods who was also shot Wednesday, Matt Mika, remains in critical condition and will require additional surgeries, his family said Thursday. When it came time to introduce Rep. Scalise and his face flashed on the jumbotron, the stadium went nuts.

The shooting has raised questions about lawmakers' security, renewed the nation's contentious debate over guns, and drawn new attention to the harsh rhetoric that reflects America's political polarisation. "But as you all know, tonight's game has taken on a much deeper level of meaning, beyond anything that we would have thought".

Trump added, "We pray for all of the victims of this awful crime who are still recovering, including Zachary Barth and Matt Mika, both of whom are respected and cherished by so many".

Many lawmakers in both parties called for unity after the shooting.

The president made his comments as he spoke in Miami to announce a new policy on Cuba. What a great job they did! There were reports of death threats being called in to congressional Democrats and Republicans alike. Vice President Pence was among the many who applauded their heroics.
