"When he arrived, he was in critical condition with an imminent risk of death", Dr. Jack Sava, director of trauma at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, said during a press conference Friday afternoon. "We have controlled his internal bleeding and his vital signs have stabilized".
Sava said Scalise would need to undergo an additional operation within the next 48 hours and more beyond that.
The bullet damaged blood vessels, bones, and internal organs, Sava said.
Scalise was wounded when a gunman opened fire at a GOP lawmaker baseball practice Wednesday morning.
Several lawmakers and analysts have suggested the shooting could be politically-motivated given the shooter's leftist rants on social media, and called on all lawmakers support each other after the indident.
Should Scalise's recovery go smoothly, Sava said he didn't see Scalise's injuries stopping him from returning to his job.
"An excellent recovery is a good possibility".
Earlier Friday, House Speaker Paul Ryan paid a visit to his injured colleague, who faces the prospect of a lengthy hospitalization after getting shot in the hip at a baseball practice by a deranged man with grudges against Trump and the GOP.
What exactly is the jury weighing in the Yanez case?
Now on trail for second-degree manslaughter, Yanez told jurors that the shooting was justified because he had feared for his life. Castile had THC, a component of marijuana, in his blood when he died. "He wasn't even close to being sure", he said.
Dr. Sava said that Mr. Scalise sustained a single rifle wound that traveled across his pelvis and was in shock when he arrived at the hospital. "And because of him, and the tremendous pain and suffering he's now enduring - he's having a hard time, far worse than anybody thought - our country will perhaps become closer, more unified". "I have not counted, but I would guess that there are hundreds of fragments", Sava said.
Scalise has remained under sedation, although doctors have lightened the medication at times so that the congressman can communicate with relatives. Investigators are trying to determine what his intent may have been - whether it was a list of potential targets for violence or whether he wrote them down for some other reason, one official said.
The doctors said that while Scalise remains in critical condition, they "are encouraged by improvement in his condition".
Sava said he told Scalise's family that "I am not declaring victory until he's playing ball in his back yard with his family".
As for rehabilitation, Sava said he believed Scalise will be "able to walk and hopefully run" in the future. "Most importantly, we are forever grateful for the heroism of [Capitol police agents] Crystal Griner and David Bailey who saved everyone's lives at the baseball field that morning, including Steve's".
Bailey received a hero's welcome from a record crowd of almost 25,000 at Thursday's game when he threw out the first pitch, and Barth also showed up for the game, walking with crutches.
Lobbyist Matt Mika was shot multiple times and remains hospitalized.
