Ill. Man ID'd as Suspect in GOP Baseball Shooting

White House spokesman Sean Spicer tweeted earlier that Trump had been made aware of the shooting.

Two members of Scalise's security detail, witnesses said, were shot - but one still kept firing as he dropped to the ground.

Speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin and Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi of California both spoke on the floor issuing calls for unity.

The shooting at the congressional baseball practice is in fact the sixth such incident this week.

MedStar Washington said in a tweet Wednesday afternoon that Rep. Steve Scalise "was critically injured and remains in critical condition".

"The Wisconsin Republican praised the efforts of Capitol police officers and other law enforcement".

The second-term congressman said he joined Republicans and Democrats at the Capitol after the shooting, where members of Congress held hands in prayer for the victims. The suspect was apprehended, and the five people wounded were taken to area hospitals.

Steve Scalise, the House majority whip, headed into surgery at a hospital in Washington at 10 a.m., according to a statement from his office. Officials said none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.

"It's pretty well known in the neighborhood who those folks are on the baseball field", Brooks said. He later died from his injuries, President Donald Trump said.

Fed hikes key rate for second time this year
Job gains have moderated but have been solid, on average, since the beginning of the year, and the unemployment rate has declined. The Fed has a 2% target for core consumer inflation, but the annual number has weakened to 1.5% from 1.8% earlier in the year.

Barragan was practicing with her fellow Democrats on Wednesday morning for the upcoming baseball game when she was informed of the shooting at the Republican practice field.

The team was taking batting practice when gunshots rang out and chaos erupted.

"I hear loud explosions. The gunman was over by the third base dugout with a clear view of the field", Sen. Jeff Flake said Mika was the most seriously injured.

An initial police report lists the gunman's weapon as an M-4 assault rifle, CBS News has learned. Sen. Democratic former Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille said he had spoken often with the man on recent mornings at the nearby YMCA.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy said they drew the gunman's fire while most of the representatives took cover in a dugout, where they would have been easy targets.

David Miller, who saw the shooting, described a scene in which some players were far enough away from the gunman to run for shelter, while others were pinned down in the middle of the ball field. He said he did so to ensure that Mrs. Scalise would not find out about the shooting through the media. He condemned the shooting, saying he was "sickened by this despicable act". "You want to make sure the airway is open, make sure the person is breathing and "C" stands for circulation, which is basically trying to control blood loss", he said. "We started giving him some liquids", Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.) told CNN.

U.S. Rep. Roger Williams (Texas) said a member of his congressional staff was among the victims. Williams did not say what condition the staffer was in.

"The camaraderie that we have in the mornings when we are there is such a change from the pressure that we all feel on a regular basis", Meehan said, his voice shaking.

In response to reporters' questions about whether there should be policy changes as a result of the shooting, McAuliffe (D) said "there are too many guns on the street" but added "that's not a discussion for today".
